Old fuse boards are the weak link in most homes
If your board has rewireable fuses, no RCD protection or is installed in a wooden enclosure, it doesn't meet current regulations and offers little protection against electric shock or fire. We replace them with a dual-RCD or RCBO consumer unit. Fully tested, certified and notified to building control under Part P.
Signs your board needs replacing
- Rewireable fuses with coloured wire (pre-1990s installation)
- No RCD protection, no "test" button on the board
- Plastic enclosure that should be metal to meet the 18th Edition
- Fuses that blow repeatedly or trip under normal load
- Scorched or blackened terminals or melted plastic
- Buzzing or humming from the board
- EICR failure with C1 or C2 coding on the board itself
- Planning a rewire, EV charger or kitchen extension, the board usually needs to come with it
Survey, replace, certify
- 10-minute phone survey. We ask about your property, circuits and any known issues. For most domestic boards we can give a fixed price on the call.
- Pre-install checks on the day. Insulation resistance, earthing and bonding are tested before we isolate, so we know the wiring behind the board is safe for a new unit.
- Fit the new consumer unit. Metal-clad, dual-RCD or RCBO-per-circuit depending on spec. Surge protection and SPD included as standard on most jobs.
- Label, test and commission. Every circuit labelled clearly, RCDs tested under load, MCB ratings matched to the circuits, board photographed for your records.
- Certify & notify. Electrical Installation Certificate issued. Building control notified under Part P. You receive the compliance certificate by post within 30 days.
Fixed price, given upfront
Includes new consumer unit, surge protection, labelling, full testing, certification and building control notification. Remedial work (earthing, bonding) quoted separately only if needed. You're told before we start.
